Pickleball Injuries: Why So Many Active Adults Are Getting Hurt

Why is a sport designed for fun and fitness suddenly leading to so many injuries?

Pickleball has exploded in popularity, especially among active adults who want a social and engaging way to stay fit. But with that rise in participation, we are also seeing a sharp increase in injuries. Many of these injuries are preventable and often stem from how the body is prepared, or not prepared, for the demands of the sport.

>>>If you are noticing aches, stiffness, or want to stay ahead of injury, request an appointment to get started today.

Why Pickleball Is Causing More Injuries

Pickleball looks simple on the surface, but it places unique demands on the body. Quick lateral movements, sudden stops, and repetitive swinging motions can stress muscles and joints that may not be conditioned for that level of activity.

Many players jump into games without gradually building strength or mobility. Others may be returning to activity after years away from sports, which increases the risk of strain or overload.

The combination of high repetition and sudden intensity is what often leads to injury, not the sport itself.

The Most Common Pickleball Injuries

We frequently see a pattern in the types of injuries that develop from pickleball. These typically involve areas of the body that absorb force or control rapid movement.

Common injuries include:

  • Tennis elbow and shoulder strain from repetitive swinging
  • Knee pain from quick directional changes
  • Achilles or calf strains from explosive movements
  • Lower back irritation from rotational stress

These issues often start as mild discomfort but can quickly progress if ignored.

The Role of Strength and Mobility

One of the biggest gaps we see in pickleball players is a lack of preparation. Strength and mobility are essential for handling the physical demands of the game.

Without adequate strength, muscles fatigue more quickly and place extra stress on joints. Limited mobility can also force the body into inefficient movement patterns, increasing strain in vulnerable areas.

Targeted programs like Premier Strength help build the foundation needed to move confidently and reduce injury risk.

In many cases, we also incorporate Manual Therapy to improve joint mobility and restore proper movement mechanics, allowing players to perform at a higher level with less strain.

Why Injuries Keep Coming Back

Many players try to push through discomfort or rely on rest alone. While rest may reduce symptoms temporarily, it does not address the underlying issue.

Without correcting strength deficits or movement limitations, the same patterns that caused the injury remain. This often leads to recurring pain or new injuries in different areas.

Programs like Back and Spine Injuries are designed to identify and correct these root causes, helping prevent the cycle of repeat injuries.

Smart Recovery and Performance Support

When injuries do occur, the right combination of treatment and movement is key to recovery.

We often use:

  • Dry Needling to reduce muscle tension and improve circulation
  • Deep Tissue Laser Therapy to decrease inflammation and support healing

These treatments help calm symptoms while allowing you to continue progressing with a structured strengthening program.

Recovery should not mean stopping activity completely. It should mean returning to movement in a smarter, more controlled way.

Stay in the Game Longer

Pickleball is meant to enhance your life, not limit it. With the right preparation and guidance, you can continue playing at a high level while reducing your risk of injury.

We focus on helping active adults build strength, improve mobility, and move with confidence so they can keep doing what they love.

We proudly support our community at our Edmonds location, helping players stay active, resilient, and pain-free.
